What is Physical Culture?

Cambridge Gardens Physical Culture Club was established in 1977.  Jordan Springs has been included in our club name from 2021 to properly represent our growing membership and community.  We have been a place for all ages and backgrounds to come together for fun and fitness.

We are a founding club for United Physical Culture.  Physie with Cambridge Gardens & Jordan Springs will be fun filled, inspire you to do your best, keeping you fit with great music and all with like-minded people who will become your Physie family.  How do we describe Physie? A choreographed syllabus to fun music as well as nursery rhyme games for our little ones.  They are learning the whole time while having fun dancing and moving.

Physical Culture or ‘Physie’  is a uniquely Australian dancesport, originating in 1892! Today, there are a number of associations across Australia with varying styles.  Physie is an affordable alternative to the traditional dance sport, that all women can enjoy.

Physie comprises of marching and a syllabus of choreographed dance routines taught over a season running between February - November each year. The style of dance routines can be described as a combination of aerobic exercise, basic ballet, and contemporary dance.

The complete syllabus will consist of traditional marching and 5 routines for all age groups. They are Intro, Relaxed,

Exercise, Floor Work for all, then Dance for Juniors through to Seniors, and Rhythm for Ladies only.

It is both an individual and team-based dance sport, with a range of competitions generally running from August through to November.

Physie is typically a women’s sport, however it is open and welcoming to all, offering classes for all ages and abilities, beginning from age 3 years.

It is not uncommon for women to share Physie across generations –  Mothers and daughters, sisters, cousins and even grandmothers!
